Timing is EVERYTHING when planning any project! So, at what point should you hire an interior designer?
Each type of project is slightly different, but they all have one thing in common. Hire your designer IN ADVANCE! Let me repeat for those in the back, hire your designer in advance well before your project is set to begin.
Why is hiring your designer during the preliminary planning stages so important?
Our job as interior designers is to curate and plan a project from concept to completion. We take immense pride in our creative process. We need time for the concepts to flow and come together.
The planning stage for every project is crucial! This is when your design team begins preliminary drawings for construction, millwork, custom furniture, fixtures and finishes. These plans are then submitted to our trades for estimates, permits and revisions which can take weeks before they are presentation ready for our clients!
At House of Albi, this planning stage is phase two in our three phase process, The House of Albi Approach.
The project timeline breakdown!
For custom homes, you want to build your team; contractor, architect and interior designer, about 2 years from when you hope to move into your new home. Developing this team in the earliest planning stages will ensure cohesive planning and design, seamless processes and efficient, realistic timelines.
For renovations and additions, hiring on your team about one year to your desired start date is really important. This timeline may sounds extensive however, the planning stages of a renovation and/or addition require time to design, gather permits and determine costs.
For interior decorating, you want to hire an interior designer around 6-8 months from when you want to be using your newly furnished home. Furniture can have long lead-times especially when working with custom pieces.
I hope this post has given some insight on when we recommend you hire an interior designer for your next project!
talk soon, xo
